Acting Assistant Secretary for Health for Integrated Veteran Care, Veterans Health Administration Department of Veterans Affairs

Effective February 2024, Hillary P. Peabody, was appointed as the Acting Assistant Under Secretary for Health (AUSH) for the Office of Integrated Veteran Care (IVC) in the Veterans Health Administration. She is charged with leading the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) efforts to ensure that Veterans and beneficiaries can access the care they need, when they need it. Prior to this acting role, she was the Deputy Assistant Under Secretary for Health (DAUSH) for IVC. Ms. Peabody is a health care executive leader with experience leading large scale, high-visibility transformation initiatives for health care payers, providers, and integrated delivery systems. In past consulting roles, she supported VA and Department of Defense. In 2016, she co-designed and led the Diffusion of Excellence Initiative on behalf of VHA. As of 2021, this model had spread over four hundred best practices, impacted over five million Veterans’ lives, engaged 25,000 employees across 150 facilities and saved over $75 million. She also led a joint initiative sponsored by VA and Senator Elizabeth Dole to improve Veterans’ ability to age in their homes and provided organizational design support to VHA’s former Office of Community Care, now IVC. In 2015, Ms. Peabody led a Congressionally-mandated assessment of staffing and productivity in the VA healthcare system as a response to the Choice Act. As part of this work, she briefed recommendations to members of Congress and the White House-appointed Commission on Care.
