Rick May, MD, is a Senior Principal with Vizient Consulting Solutions where he leads the Vizient Clinical Quality Improvement consulting team. He is responsible for creating and implementing a variety of clinical improvement solutions for Vizient member hospitals. He is an expert in change management, clinical quality improvement, physician governance, quality analytics, and surgery improvement. Prior to joining Vizient, Dr. May spent 10 years leading consulting teams working on a variety of quality and value improvement programs in multiple clinical areas including surgical perioperative optimization, cardiac surgery, heart failure, sepsis, pneumonia, and optimizing physician opioid management. Prior to his life as a consultant, Dr. May worked for 20 years as an Orthopedic Trauma Surgeon in Denver. He ran the Orthopedic Trauma Services for four Denver-area hospitals. He is also a past-president of the Colorado Medical Society. Dr. May received his undergraduate degree in Business Economics, and did graduate work in advanced mathematics, analytics, and biostatistics. Prior to his doctor life, Rick worked as a researcher and computer programmer in the Life Sciences Division at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas where he developed artificial intelligence systems to direct astronaut fitness programs on the International Space Station.
