Dr. Mark Roltsch received his undergraduate degree in civil engineering from Virginia Military Institute, his MS in kinesiology from James Madison University, and his PhD in exercise physiology from the University of Maryland. He spent 2 years at the Howard University Cancer Center as a post-doc investigating the physiological and biochemical mechanism by which regular physical activity interventions lead to reducing the risk of cancer. After finishing his postdoc, he accepted a position as a NASA contractor and a peer review administrator in charge of all NASA grant reviews related to humans in space. In 2005, he joined NIH as a Scientific Review Officer in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in the Clinical Trials and Training Branch. In 2010, Mark moved to the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences as a Program Director in the Office of Research Training and Career Development. He was responsible for promoting opportunities for investigators, early in their research careers to perform basic, preclinical, or clinical cardiovascular research. In 2012, he left the government for St. Mary’s University, TX as the Executive Director of the Office of Academic Research and Sponsored Projects. During the three years at St. Mary’s University, he increased grant funding from $2 million to $8 million. In November 2015, Mark joined the University of West Florida as the Assistant Vice President for Research and the Director of Research and Sponsored Programs. In 2018, Mark joined the US Dept. of Veterans Affairs in the Research and Development Office Health Science Officer. As a member of the Office of Research and Development, Mark works in the Medical Health Portfolio, managing awards for lung, skin, and head and neck cancers. He is also a program Manager overseeing the Career Development Award program. Mark is a graduate of the 2022 Leadership VA program and VHA Leadership Coaching Program. He is an adjunct professor at the University of West Florida, teaching classes on developing a student’s dissertation. He lives in Pensacola, FL. He is still a certified professional ski and snowboard instructor and picked up his 35-year instructor pin this April. He is an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hiking, mountain biking, swimming, and doing activities with his children. He was inducted into the Virginia Military Sports Hall of Fame for springboard diving in 2000.
