Col. (Dr.) John Andrus

Colonel (Dr.) John R. Andrus serves as the Command Surgeon for Air Force Space Command (AFSPC). In this capacity he provides consultative support to 2 numbered Air Forces, 3 centers, 8 wings, 134 operating locations and 6 Military Treatment Facilities. He leads and sets policy for the 1,314 medical personnel responsible for the health and well-being of over 159,000 active duty members, retirees and dependents with a medical budget exceeding $69M. He manages all AFSPC medical readiness planning, training and execution and advises senior leadership on relevant medical matters.

Col Andrus entered the Air Force through the Uniformed Services University and completed family medicine, aerospace and general preventive medicine residencies. He has served as Staff Family Physician, Allergy Provider, Space Shuttle Support Flight Surgeon, Squadron Medical Element and Chief of Aerospace Medicine. Col Andrus has commanded effectively at the squadron and group level and led at the joint combatant command division level.

Col Andrus is a chief flight surgeon and family physician with combat, humanitarian and space shuttle support experience. As a flight surgeon, he has been an airlifter logging the majority of his flying hours in C-130E, C-9A, C-17A, C-5A and T-1A aircraft. In October 2000, he assisted in the evacuation of injured sailors from the USS Cole terrorist attack. He is the recipient of both the Mackay Trophy and the Malcolm C. Grow Flight Surgeon of the Year Award.
