Roy is from Huntsville, Alabama and received a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He worked for Alabama Congressman Bud Cramer from 1997 until 2003, when he left to accept a position in NASA's Government & Public Relations Directorate at Marshall Space Flight Center. In 2006 he helped launch GATR Technologies, and ran all customer-facing operations as VP of Sales and Customer Support until the company was acquired for $232M in 2016.  In 2023 he accepted a full time position for Australian company Marathon Robotics, which provides realistic live-fire robotic training to members of the armed forces and law enforcement.
