Colonel Paul Kwon

Clinical Advisor, PEO STRI US Army

COL Paul Kwon is currently assigned as the Clinical Advisor at PEO-STRI in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Kwon was born in Seoul, South Korea. He is a first generation immigrant graduating from the United States Military Academy with a BS in Environmental Sciences and Systems Engineering. He earned a MS in Environmental and Civil Engineering from Oregon State University. He graduated from University of Washington with a MPH and a Doctor of Osteopathy from Midwestern University.

During his graduate work, he has received multiple grants from NIH, Western Hazardous Substance Research Center, National Cooperative Highway Research Programs, and the Chevron Technology. His research collaboration during this period also included academia and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. His scholarship awards included the Health Professional Scholarship Program towards his medical degree.

He received a direct commission into the United States military as a Quartermaster officer. He served as an Assistant Operations Officer for 593rd Support Group at Fort Lewis, WA (1993-94); Water Purification Platoon Leader for the 24th QM Company (1994-95); and Supply Support Activities Platoon Leader for the 542nd Maintenance Company (1995-96). He served as a US Army Reserves Team Leader for the 301st MI Brigade (Linguists) in the interim before pursuing his career in medicine. Upon graduation from medical school, he was commissioned into the US Medical Corps and completed a Pediatric residency at SAUSHEC. He then served as Chief of Pediatrics at Fort Irwin, CA (2007-09) and deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom as Medical Chief of a Troop Medical Clinic in COB Speicher (2009). He then graduated from a dual Preventive and Occupational Medicine fellowship program at MAMC; and, he served as Chief of Preventive and Occupational Medicine at Fort Wainwright, AK (2013-15). He served as Director of the Preventive Medicine Branch and then the Medical Director, Sleep Research Lab as well as Director, US Army Medical Research Directorate-Georgia labs at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (2015-19). He served as the Chief of Preventive and Occupational Medicine and Public Health Emergency Officer at Fort Jackson, SC and deployed with the same functions under Operation Spartan Shield (2019-2021).

Responsibilities include medical advisor to the PEO and integrate medical expertise on the Simulation Training Environment. Additional duties include Adjunct Assistant Professor at USUHS (Epidemiology and Biostatistics), Affiliate Professor at the University of Central Florida School of Medicine, Reviewer for Journal of Military Medicine, Review Editor on the Editorial Board of Occupational Health and Safety for Frontiers in Public Health Journal. Participated in NTSA Patient Safety Working Group, NATO Modeling and Simulation Working Group, TATRC Data Collection Working Group, Army Science Board medical subcommittee, DADLAC “Water Cooler” Working Group, MM&S Requirements Board, ECIT IITSEC Paper Committee. Pediatric staff at Patrick SFB, and Level III acquisition work force qualified.

COL Kwon has over 48 publications and presentations in national conferences and peer reviewed publications. He is the recipient of the 2008 Patient Choice Award and nominated for Best Pediatrician in the Western Regional Command. He is the graduate of the Quartermaster Officer Basic Course, AMEDD Captains Career Course, and the Command and General Staff College. COL Kwon’s military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with silver oak leaf clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with oak leaf cluster, and the Iraqi Campaign Medal. He is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit.
