Dr. Iain Boyd PhD

Director of the Center for National Security Initiatives and the H.T. Sears Memorial Professor of Aerospace Engineering Sciences University of Colorado, Boulder

Dr. Iain D. Boyd is the Director of the Center for National Security Initiatives at the University of Colorado where he is also the H.T. Sears Memorial Professor of Aerospace Engineering Sciences. He received a B.S. in Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Aeronautics & Astronautics from the University of Southampton in England. He worked as a Research Scientist at the NASA Ames Research Center, and as a faculty member at Cornell University and the University of Michigan. Dr. Boyd is an author of over 600 refereed technical articles, conference papers, and technical publications, and has given over 500 technical presentations, including more than 100 invited, plenary, and keynote lectures worldwide, on a variety of topics dealing with aerospace engineering and defense sciences. His research involves computational modeling of complex gas and plasma systems with applications that include hypersonics, space propulsion, rocket propulsion, space physics, materials science, and directed energy. Dr. Boyd is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), the American Physical Society and the Royal Aeronautical Society. He is a recipient of the Lawrence Sperry Award and the Thermophysics Award from AIAA. Dr. Boyd served with the Vice Chair of the U.S. Air Force Scientific Advisory Board. He received the Chief of Staff of the Air Force Award for Exceptional Public Service in 2017. Dr. Boyd also served on the Board on Army RDT&E, Systems Acquisition, and Logistics (BARSL), and currently serves on the Science, Technology, & Engineering Committee for Sandia National Laboratory, and the Intelligence Science & Technology Expert Group of the National Academies.
