Dr. Carmen Carney

Hypersonics Key Initiative Lead, Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright Patterson Air Force Base US Air Force

Carmen Carney is the Hypersonics Key Initiative Lead at the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, AFRL, Wright Patterson Air Force Base. She serves as the primary focal point in RX for materials and manufacturing technologies for hypersonic systems. She also leads the development and coordination of hypersonic technology roadmaps both inside RX and externally. As part of her roles she identifies new technology developments and transition opportunities leading a team of over 50 RX scientists and engineers to execute these projects. Dr. Carney also serves as the Senior Technical Advisor to the OSD ManTech Hypersonics portfolio where she is program manager for the cross-service Manufacturing of Carbon-Carbon Composites for Hypersonic Applications (MOC3HA). Dr. Carney entered the Air Force in March 2014 after working for 7 years as an onsite research contractor in the field of high temperature ceramics and composites. She has 15+ years of experience in developing, testing, and characterizing high temperature composites and ceramics both as a researcher and program manager authoring over 30 peer reviewed papers and presentations on the subject. Prior to her current position, she was the technical area lead for materials and manufacturing for the High Speed Strike Weapons Systems (HSSW) Air Force Program. Dr. Carney is a nationally-recognized thought leader in hypersonic systems participating in multiple invited panels, planning and roadmapping discussions, and studies for test and evaluation investments. She serves as a Hypersonics Technology & Systems Conference Advisory Committee member. Additionally, Dr. Carney has directly supported AFLCMC/EB in their development and acquisition programs.
