Sheriff Patrick “Pat” Labat was elected as the 28th Sheriff of Fulton County, Georgia in November 2020. Labat has enjoyed a distinguished career with more years of experience in law enforcement, spending nearly a decade as Chief of the City of Atlanta Department of Corrections. Immediately upon taking office as sheriff, Labat changed the mission statement of the agency to one word: "Service”, as he is fully committed to the agency serving the citizens of Fulton County helping to ensure it remains the elite place to live, work and play.
During his first year in office, Sheriff Labat worked to expand the presence of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office throughout the county and prioritized public safety — expanding the K-9 unit, launching the first ever Motors Unit and Crime Suppression FAST Unit which is focused on getting guns used for illegal purposes off the streets, away from our youth and out of the hands of convicted felons, tracking repeat offenders, serving high risk warrants and serving as a force multiplier for law enforcement agencies throughout Fulton County.
Sheriff Labat is a relationship-builder and has worked hard to renew relationships between law enforcement and our community. He continues to partner with local, state, and federal agencies. He routinely challenges those he encounters to "Think Twice. Save a Life.", a campaign designed to remind citizens to take an active role in preventing tragedies by considering the often-irreversible consequences of gun violence.
Sheriff Labat served as President of the Georgia Chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), President of the Georgia Jail Association in 2016 and was named Georgia Jail Administrator of the Year. Sheriff Labat was invited to serve as a witness at the Social Problems Hearing for the President’s 2020 Commission for Law Enforcement and Justice and was recently appointed by the Governor to serve on the Georgia Criminal Case Data Exchange Board.
Sheriff Labat began his career in 1988 as a detention officer before working his way up the ranks to Chief and being re-elected Sheriff. As a native Atlantan, and lifelong resident of Fulton County, he is a proud graduate of Fredrick Douglass High School and Clark Atlanta University, and he earned his Masters in Public Administration from Columbus State University.
Labat coached little league baseball with the Cascade Youth Sports Organization and the Sandtown Youth Sports Association and volunteered with the North Atlanta High School PTSA and Basketball Booster Club. He and his wife, Jacki, share four adult children and 2 rescue dogs, and they reside in Midwest Cascade in Southwest Atlanta.
