How Boeing Plans to Scale Additive Manufacturing Technologies

The additive manufacturing industry is at the forefront of revolutionizing modern manufacturing processes for aerospace and defense sectors. In fact, the additive manufacturing industry is expected to surpass a staggering value of $76.16 billion by 2030.

In order to explore more about the cutting-edge realm of additive manufacturing, IDGA is partnering with ATSM International for the 3rd annual Advanced Manufacturing for Defense Summit. On June 11-12 at the Westin Hotel in Pasadena, California, industry leaders, experts and innovators will participate in collaborative discussions against the backdrop of recent investments by industry, as well as program initiatives funded by the current administration, adding a layer of timeliness and relevance to the discourse.

One of the perks of this year’s event is for the first time Boeing will host a group of event attendees to visit Boeing’s Engagement Center in El Segundo, California. This opportunity, which is only available to U.S. citizens, will provide visitors a tour of the facility, a collaborative workshop, and presentations from Boeing thought leaders in advanced manufacturing.

Boeing is not only hosting attendees at their facility, but also plans to have Nicholas Mule, Director of the Additive Manufacturing Intelligence Center, present at the conference. Before his presentation, IDGA spoke with Nicholas about some of the of the challenges in scaling additive manufacturing capabilities, what he is looking forward to at this year’s event, and more.

Giving Additive Manufacturing Flight

In this interview, Melissa Orme analyses how AM has grown in Boeing and how they are planning to take it further. From sustainability to improvements in technology this interview highlights why AMA USA 2024 will be another crucial conference for the AM ecosystem.

Trends and Challenges Shaping Additive Manufacturing in Defense

From June 11-12 the top minds in aerospace, defense, space and manufacturing will meet in Pasadena, California for the 3rd iteration of Advanced Manufacturing for Defense. This gathering, conducted in partnership with ASTM International, will serve as a nexus of industry leaders, experts, and innovators, where collaborative discussions will unfold against the backdrop of recent investments by industry, as well as program initiatives funded by the current administration, adding a layer of timeliness and relevance to the discourse.

Dr. Mohsen Seifi is the Vice President of Global Advanced Manufacturing Programs at ASTM International, and this year’s conference will be his 3rd as chairman of this US- based event. In his role at ASTM International Dr. Seifi leads a team of highly experienced individuals with the goal of enabling industries to adopt advanced technologies such as additive manufacturing, robotics and autonomous systems by providing standardization support, training, certification, market intelligence and advisory services.

Before attendees funnel into the Westin Hotel in Pasadena this June, IDGA sat down with Dr. Seifi to discuss the advanced manufacturing space and what he is looking forward to during this year’s conference.

Top 10 Uses of Additive Manufacturing in Defense

The rise of additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, has had an impact on every industry, and the defense space is no exception. Nearly a decade ago IDGA shared the first iteration of our top 10 uses of additive manufacturing in defense. Those uses included tasks like printing food or treating injured soldiers. In 2024 some things on that list have stayed true while others are no longer relevant uses of additive manufacturing in defense.

Before Advanced Manufacturing for Defense kicks off this June 11-12 at the Westin Hotel in Pasadena, California, IDGA wanted to refine our list of the top 10 uses of additive manufacturing in defense.
